Lanzarote – touring the volcanic island by car
In a hire car on Lanzarote you can drive past jutting volcanoes and miles of sandy beaches. The beautiful volcanic island is located about 140 kilometres west of the Moroccan coast. With a mild climate throughout the year, the average annual air temperature is 20.5 °C. In the now extinct language of the island, Guanche, the island was called Tyterogaka, meaning the one that is all ochre, on account of the dominant colour of this volcanic outcrop that rose above the sea about 15.5 million years ago.
The best way of exploring the extravagant landscape of the island, which in its entirety is a Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site is in a hire car. You can drive along meandering roads up the mountainous slopes of the Famara Massiv in the north to discover exhilarating viewpoints. In an economic hire car from TUI Cars the island is yours to explore and experience at your pace and as the whim takes you. The Penas del Chache is the highest elevation of the island at 671 metres and is well worth a visit in good weather.
Hire a car at TUICars.com and pick it up at one of our partner car rental offices. Hit the road to discover small, typical Canary villages in the hinterland with the spontaneity only a hire car can give you.
Cueva de los Verdes
Seven-kilometre-long lava tubes are found in the north of the island at the impressive lava cave Cueva de los Verdes, which originated about 3,500 years ago when Volcan de la Corona erupted. The cavities and tubes were created by rapidly cooling lava over fast moving lava flows from the eruption. When the last of the lave flows stopped the solidified crust remained leaving grottoes, collapsed caves and the longest and most famous lava tunnel in the world. The subterranean cavity system was later used by the inhabitants as a refuge to hide from slave raiders and pirates in the 17th century. Book a guided tour to climb down a 50-metre-drop into a huge cavern to discover up close the network of extensive galleries and tunnels.
The last part of the underground tour takes you past a spectacularly illuminated small freshwater lake. There is also a subterranean concert hall that echoes enchanting sounds at the annual music festival. This is a top destination in a car hire on Lanzarote.
Papagayo beaches
The beautiful beaches, spread over seven bays, are among the most beautiful beaches on Lanzarote. The bays invite you to chill on wide white sandy beaches and swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear water. Playas de Papagayo has protected status as part of the Monumento Natural de Ajaches. In an economic hire car you can reach these scenic beachscapes from Lanzarote Airport – there is a small toll for using the access roads. Check out the bays to find your favourite.
You can see the neighbouring islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos from the beaches. Playa de Papagayo, the half-moon shaped beach close to the tip of the rocky peninsula, boasts fine sand. Book an economic hire car on the TUICars.com portal and discover the amazing adventure Lanzarote has to offer.
Timanfaya
The Timanfaya National Park features the Fire Mountains aka Montañas del Fuego - as the name suggests, they are of volcanic origin.
The young volcanic landscape of the Montañas del Fuego is some 19 million years old, apocalyptic, stark and beautiful, and extends over an area of about 51 km² with a radius of 30 km. This unique volcanic landscape features lava fields, various volcanic rock structures and lava tubes. Timanfaya was declared a national park in 1974.
In the autumn of 1730 one of the longest eruption phases of the earth's history began. For six years, more than 100 new craters spewed lava and ashes over the surrounding countryside. The result is an extraordinary volcanic landscape that completely changed the geography of Timanfaya. The molten lava buried large parts of the island. Today this unique landscape can be discovered and admired. Hire a breezy cabriolet on Lanzarote and discover the beauty of the island in style. Park your car at Isolate de Hilario car park for a 45-minute tour in an official guagua, the local name for a small bus, through spectacular volcanic landscapes.
