The island of La Gomera with its wild landscapes, its unique flora and its unique cultural features is a popular destination for holidaymakers looking for relaxation in the midst of breath-taking natural landscapes. The volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean is easily accessible by car. On the south and west sides of the island, with their black beaches that heat up under the sun, temperatures are warmer. Different types of forest and vegetation grow on the somewhat moister northern part of the island.
The best way to explore the different facets of La Gomera flexibly and your way is in a hire car. Adventurous families and travellers should drive to Valle Gran Rey and visit the waterfall in El Guro. On the way you may be able to hear the sounds of el silbo, the whistling language of the islanders. Pick up your hire car directly at the airport and start your adventures. The local road system, referred to as caminos vecinales, takes you to all the villages on La Gomera via the centre of the island.
By car instead of by boat, yet soak up the colonial charm
Among the most important destinations on the second smallest Canary Island is Garajonay National Park, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. The trees are clearly the protagonists of the forest, as they bend and twist as if looking for the most comfortable position to relax. Situated in the centre of the island, the national park is connected to all villages and towns by the island’s road network and easily accessible by car.
Even tourists staying in the capital of San Sebastian de la Gomera can get there easily. This city, a port of call on Christopher Columbus’s legendary expedition in 1492 when he discovered America, has retained its colonial charm to this day. There is always a hint of history in the air that condenses as soon as you pass the house where the explorer stayed. Also worth a visit is the Torre del Conde, which was built around 1447 as a part of the town’s fortifications and is still preserved in its original state.
Car hire on La Gomera - general information
The easiest way to get to La Gomera is by boat. There is a small airport in Playa de Santiago, but this is only national. The ferry departs from the port of Los Cristianos in south Tenerife and arrives in the port of San Sebastian about an hour later. From here your best bet is to use a car as the road network that criss-crosses the island is well developed, but public transport is not so good - TUI Cars will be happy to put you in touch with a reliable car rental firm on La Gomera. We recommend you take out fully comprehensive insurance and excess waiver insurance.
