Dunas de Maspalomas
The dunes of Maspalomas on Gran Canaria cover some 418 hectares and at their widest point extend 1.5 km into the interior. Declared a protected area since 1987, the dunes are a special habitat and home to a diversity of species. The dunes are growing at a snail's pace of 2 - 5 m per year; the sand is made up of crushed, rinsed coral and shell limestone blown by the northeast trade winds. The growth of the dunes is hindered further inland by vegetation and the weakening of the wind. In the west the dunes are cut off by the lagoon Charco de Maspalomas. The reserve is home to herons, ducks, grouse and plovers and is a vital stop-over and resting place for migratory birds. Where you are staying on Gran Canaria dictates the time needed to drive to the dunes of Maspalomas in an economic hire car booked through TUI Cars.
Las Palmas, Vegueta
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was founded in 1478 in an oasis of palm trees. Just 100 years ago, it was known as Villa Real de las Palmas, the Royal City of Palm Trees. If you are looking for a central focal point, a nuclear town centre, you are out of luck. The bustling city comprises many different and distinct districts, the barrios. Triana, formerly a mercantile and artisan quarter, now boasts a pedestrian zone, shops and boutiques. Puerto de la Luz is not only the port of call of large cruise ships, but also borders La Catalina, the liveliest district of Las Palmas, bordered on the other side by the extensive sandy beach of Las Canteras. La Catalina is full of cafes, pubs, bars, clubs and discos.
The historic old town of Las Palmas is located in the district of Vegueta. Here you find the most museums, art galleries and winding alleyways. To explore Las Palmas with all its charms, rent an economic hire car on Gran Canaria and discover the capital city your way in a cabriolet.
Old coats of arms, green patios and beautifully carved doors - Teror is one of the most typical and beautiful towns on the island. Small, tranquil plazas, old but proud residential houses with impressive wooden balconies and ornate carvings add to the charm of this beautiful town. The veneration of the patron saint Virgen del Pino dates back to the 15th century is still in evidence today. Her statue in the Basilica of Teror makes this town the most important place of pilgrimage and religious centre on Gran Canaria.
Teror is about 37 km away from Gran Canaria Airport, where you can easily pick up your hire car. Exploration of the beautiful town is best done in an economic hire car from TUI Cars.
