Rent a car in Lisbon: Fado, fish dishes and the Atlantic
The melancholic sounds of Fado, narrow cobbled streets and the view of the river Tajo as it flows into the Atlantic; this mix evokes a lugubrious yearning to travel that is embedded in Portuguese culture: in a hire car you can discover the special sights in downtown Lisbon and on the outskirts of the city. The Torre de Belém, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, just outside the city gates is an impressive monument to seafarers. Adjoining the building, are tombs of Portuguese royalty as well as the tomb of Vasco da Gama, the country’s most famous explorer. The longest bridge in Europe, 17,185 kilometres long and spanning the Tajo in the east of Lisbon, is named in his honour.
Already before your arrival in Lisbon, you can book your hire car through TUI Cars. The price includes fully comprehensive insurance and excess waiver insurance. You can arrange to pick up your hire car at the airport, or downtown, as you prefer. Discover Lisbon flexibly at your pace in a hire car. Or explore the surrounding countryside following your own itinerary. The beautiful town of Faro, for example, can be reached by car in around 2.5 hours.
Top sights in Lisbon
There are many viewpoints, known as Miradouros in Portuguese, which provide outstanding vistas of the city and its many hills. For instance, at the Moorish castle São Jorge or on the Vasco da Gama Tower on the site of the Expo 98, which today features a plethora of interesting venues and activities, such as the Oceanarium in the Parque das Nações. In a hire car tourists and travellers in Lisbon can cruise the lengthy Avenida da Liberdade, which leads from the Baixa to the upper town. The view from the highest point, the Praça Marquês de Pombal, down to the banks of the Tagus, is the highlight of a visit to Portugal's capital. If you want to experience the culture of the country, park your hire car in Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest districts, and discover it on foot. Folksy fado bars and traditional taverns offering tasty fish dishes and the local vinho verde heighten the experience of visiting Lisbon.
Excursions in the surroundings
If you want to explore Lisbon and the surrounding area by car, do not miss a trip to Sintra. The small town is situated on the edge of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which boasts ranges of green hills stretching westwards to the Atlantic Ocean. On a hike you can visit the old Moorish castle on the way or visit the centuries-old royal summer residence of Portuguese royalty, now a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The town is also well-known for its azulejos - blue, elaborately designed ceramic tiles. The journey by car from Lisbon to Sintra takes about 30 minutes. Another excursion tip is Cabo da Roca, 40 kilometres away on the westernmost point in Europe. Here you can enjoy the view over the rugged cliffs and the wild Atlantic, where the Serra de Sintra mountain range meets the deep blue sea. Lagos, too, is worth a visit. By car it takes about 2.5 hours from Lisbon to reach the beautiful coastal town. Not far away is the famous resort Albufeira, a great place to chill after an exciting tour in a hire car.
