On the road in the versatile capital
If you discover Muscat with the rental car, a visit to the magnificent Great Sultan Qabus Mosque is without alternative. The main mosque of Oman with its breathtaking dome offers space for up to 20,000 believers and is considered one of the largest and architecturally most impressive mosques in the world.
The best way to experience the daily life of Muscat's inhabitants is to visit the city's souks. In the colorful traditional markets, merchants offer their wares - from stained glass ceiling lamps to oriental spices and craftwork. The labyrinthine alleyways of the Mutrah Souk are particularly recommended, where just about every type of merchandise is on sale.
Road trip to the oasis town of Bahla
If you leave Muscat southward with your rental car, your route will take you through the middle of the desert to various oasis towns. For example, to Bahla, one of the oldest royal cities in the country. The entire oasis city is surrounded by a city wall made of clay, up to 5 meters high and 12 kilometers long. The city is dominated by the imposing fortress from the 17th century, which was also built in clay. Tip: Not far from Bahla is the oasis town of Nizwa, which is also well worth a visit and whose palm groves and gardens are overlooked by a no less impressive fortress.
Wadi Shab: majestic canyon, emerald green water
Large parts of Oman are characterized by wadis - river valleys with partially deep canyons that lead through the middle of the desert. For example, the Wadi Shab, whose canyons are among the most impressive in the entire sultanate. After an extended hike under the almost vertical rock walls, you can take an invigorating bath in the emerald-green water lined with palm trees.
Good to know: If you rent a car in Muscat, you will reach Wadi Shab after a drive of about 1.5 hours.
