The second largest island of the Mascarenhas Archipelago is Rodrigues. The capital is Port Mathurins; the population is some 40,000 inhabitants. Tourism is developing slowly there; in 2006 there were only 15 hotels and guest houses. Unfortunately, none of the major car rental firms operates in Rodrigues. But you can of course book a hire car on tuicars.com for Mauritius - as always at TUI Cars the price includes an all-round, care-free insurance package.
Discover the island paradise of Mauritius by car
The snow-white sand beaches and turquoise blue lagoons draw travellers to the volcanic island of Mauritius, located south of the equator in the Indian Ocean. The interior of island also offers many fascinating destinations and sights which should not be missed.
In a hire car you can visit the attractions at your leisure. One of the most popular sights is Rochester Falls near Souillac: rapidly cooling lava and running water have created a bizarre geologic formation.
The road leading to the waterfalls crosses a cane plantation - the dominant cash crop of the island. You can admire tropical flowers as well as the gigantic Victoria Amazonica water lilies in the botanical gardens of Pamplemousses.
You can easily drive to the extinct Trou aux Cerf crater in Curepipe. At Vieux Grand Port a Ylang-Ylang plantation - a basic ingredient for the perfume industry - is a fragrant destination for a tour in a hire car on Mauritius. You can also explore the winding coastal road around the Baie du Cap and check out the village of the same name in the afternoon to see fisherfolk landing their catch.
Black River Gorges National Park, Mauritius
The region around the extensive Black River Gorges National Park, dominated by a tropical rainforest, is easily explored in a hire car.
The winding road through the national park starts at Chamarell. It is worth stopping here to see the Seven-Coloured Earths – a dune-like landscape with layers of earth in contrasting colours: in red, yellow and brown hues. Don’t miss the Cascades Chamarell falls nearby. The route continues to the viewpoints at Alexandra Falls to marvel at the 828-metre-high Black River peak. In the heart of the national park, lying in an imposing crater, you will reach Grand Bassin, a lake revered by the many Hindus among the Mauritians.
Useful tips for driving in Mauritius
A car is the best way to explore the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.
Mauritius can be explored on your own in a hire car previously booked with TUI Cars. A TUI Cars partner car rental office can be found at Plaisance Airport and in the tourist area of Grand Baie.
First of all, remember that you drive on the left here – a custom inherited from the British during their colonial rule over the island. In built-up areas the speed limit is 40 km/h, on country roads it is 80 km/h. Roundabouts are more common than regular junctions. If you book a hire car on Mauritius, it is always advisable to ask about fully-comprehensive insurance and excess waiver insurance. At TUI Cars these items are already part of the care-free insurance package included in the price.
