Exploring Kalamata by car
In Kalamata, in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula, you can look forward to an unforgettable holiday - beaches, picturesque olive groves and the historical old town below a castle surrounded by pines. Take the opportunity to explore the rugged rocky coasts and the gently rising green mountains around the town in your hire car. Before you fly to Kalamata, you can book your car though TUI Cars and pick it up at Kalamata International Airport or a car rental office in the town centre.
Follow Navarinou Street to discover beautiful bays on the picturesque Gulf of Messinia. A detour by car to the remaining foundation walls of ancient Pharai is well worthwhile. In the comfort of your car you can also head in the direction of Messinia, an ancient Greek polis, or drive to the Taygetos mountain range, which rises to an elevation of 2,407 metres.
Places of interest in Kalamata
The centre of Kalamata with the famous historic quarters and busy fishing port is a landmark in itself. In the old town, largely shaped by the architecture of the Middle Ages and Byzantines, there are many ancient Byzantine churches to see close-up in detail. You can find out more about the history of Kalamata in the Benakeion, the town’s archaeological museum.
The Kalamata folklore museum is housed in one of the more than 320 neoclassical buidings. Cross the town to the south to watch fishermen going about their daily chores and visit one of the numerous taverns to feast on fish freshly caught in Mediterranean. The seafood is, naturally, cooked with the famous Kalamon olive oil.
