For many holidaymakers the first port of call is Westerland. This important health resort in the west is the main town on the island.
In Westerland you can park the car for a while and visit the many sights on foot and stroll along the beach promenade, which is more than six kilometres long. Another fascinating destination is the Cemetery of the Homeless, a burial ground for unknown sailors washed up dead on the shore.
