Day trips by car: Munich and Neuschwanstein
Like a knight’s castle on the edge of a rock, Neuschwanstein lies in an idyllic setting between dense forests, blue lakes and high peaks.
The silhouette of the fairy-tale castle, built by King Ludwig II, can be seen from a distance, but the magnificent details can only be discovered close up during a visit. Spend a romantic weekend in Schwangau and let yourself be captivated by this magical setting.
From Munich Airport take the A 92 and A 99 autobahns, then the B 17 towards Füssen. You can reach the castle by car in less than two hours.
Discover Munich your way
Why head off to distant places when the best is so close at hand? If you are traveling in a hire car in Germany, do not miss a visit to the Bavarian metropolis. The city of Munich and its surroundings offer plenty of attractions that can easily be reached by car: Hellabrunn Zoo, the English Garden, Nymphenburg Palace, Olympia Park and Hofbräuhaus, to name but a few. If you want to rent a car, we recommend hiring a convertible when the sun is out.
Very close to Bavaria's capital lies Starnberger See, which you can reach by car in less than an hour from Munich. Around the lake there are many leisure activities on offer, such as sailing and diving. The Paradise bathing area between Pöcking and Possendorf is ideal for families.
Car rental for families: from Munich to the Chiemgau
Grab the beach bag and head off in the hire car in the direction of Salzburg; after a few kilometres you reach the Chiemgau recreation area around the Chiemsee, the third largest lake in Germany. For families this is a great location with lots of fun activities. Here you can swim to your heart’s content, go on boat trip, or ride a bike followed up by a hearty snack in a Bavarian inn.
From Munich you can reach the Chiemgau by car on the A8 autobahn. Alternatively, the scenic route is via the B 304, which passes the northern and eastern shores of the Chiemsee.
