Vienna: the cultural and political centre of Austria
Vienna is not just the capital of Austria, but also an important political and cultural centre in Europe. When it comes to quality of life, the city is always in the top ranking. According to a UN global study, Vienna is one of the most prosperous cities in Europe.
If you are traveling by car in Vienna, the numerous sights such as the old town, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the famous Prater are easy to explore. Of course there are lots of different ways of getting to Vienna. One of the most comfortable, however, is flying there then picking up a booked hire car – this way you can reach downtown Vienna very quickly and easily. At TUI Cars you can book your hire car in advance before you travel and then pick it up at the airport from one of the local car rental firms.
From the airport it takes about 20 minutes to get to downtown Vienna. If you hire a car through TUI Cars, you also do not need to worry about fully comprehensive insurance coverage or excess waiver insurance, as these are part of the services included in the price.
Explore Vienna by car
Downtown Vienna boasts a total of 750 listed buildings from different architectural periods.
Of particular importance are St Stephen's Cathedral, the Natural History Museum, the Kunsthistorisches Museum on the Ringstrasse, the Burgtheater, the university and, of course, the Hofburg, all of which attract large numbers of visitors every year. The latter is where the emperors of the Habsburg monarchy once resided. Buildings from the baroque as well as the Jugendstil periods are characteristic of Vienna.
However, there are also contemporary buildings such as the Vienna International Centre, which lies on an island in the Danube, adding a cosmopolitan feel to Vienna. If you are touring Vienna in a hire car, you will discover delightful wine taverns called Heuriger, popular with both locals and holidaymakers, which serve the famous Viennese heurigen - this year’s wine. By the way, a lot of the wine on sale in Vienna comes from an extensive wine-growing area located to the south of the city and which can be easily explored in a hire car.
Excursion destinations around Vienna in easy reach by car
The "green lung" of the city, the Wienerwald, lies in the west of the city.
From the centre of Vienna the semi-circular forest belt that surrounds the city can be reached quickly and comfortably in a hire car. The city itself is home to numerous gardens and parks – there is so many to explore, as only half the city is actually built-up.
You should definitely not miss out on visiting Schönbrunn Palace in the outskirts of Vienna, where everything is dedicated to Empress Sissi. This iconic architectural masterpiece is easily reached in a hire car from Vienna. Inside you get a close-up of the life of the legendary Habsburg empress and her illustrious husband Franz Josef. In the summer months the Alte Donau lido or one of the beaches on the man-made Danube Island are great places to go when the weather is hot.
